  29. * STS-32 NEWS *

  31. US Space Shuttle "Columbia" is currently located at launch pad 39-A at KSC in
  32. preparation for mission STS-32 in late December. The Countdown Demonstration
  33. Test began last Thursday, 30-Nov-89, during the morning at the T-minus 24 hour
  34. mark, and led up to a simulated ignition of the main engines at 11:00 AM EST
  35. on Friday. The STS-32 flight crew arrived at KSC last Monday evening for the
  36. pad rollout of Columbia and for the practice countdown.

  39. * STS MISSION CHARTS *
  40. ----------------------
  41. Space Shuttle mission charts are available free from NASA. These charts are
  42. world maps containing groundtrack data and locations and ranges of Shuttle
  43. tracking stations, and can be used with "SPARK" kits to make visibility
  44. predictions of the Space Shuttle. A mission chart for STS-32 may be obtained

  54. * MIR NEWS *

  56. The Module-D, or air-lock module, launched to Mir on 26Nov89, is experiencing
  57. problems. Now referred to as Kvant-2, it is nearly twice the size and mass of
  58. the Kvant-1 astrophysical module that has been attached to Mir since April
  59. 1987.
  60.  
  61. A partially deployed solar panel resulted in both a reduction in some
  62. operations and the re-orientation of Kvant-2 to conserve power and maximize
  63. the sun's illumination on the solar panels to recharge the batteries on the
  64. spacecraft. Mir cosmonauts Alexander Viktorenko and Alexander Serebrov will
  65. try to make repairs on the solar panel shortly.

  67. Earth observations of Kvant-2 show it to be a very bright object with a
  68. magnitude comparable to the planet Venus. The eastern US should have several
  69. excellent opportunities to view the Mir/Kvant-2 complex in the early evening
  70. sky this week and next, weather permitting!

  73. * JUPITER ON 21 MHz *
  74. ---------------------
  75. Bob (KC2WZ) reports that the December 1989 isssue of "Sky & Telescope"
  76. magazine (page 628) carries an interesting article on receiving Jupiter's
  77. "decameter" radio emissions. These radio emissions are easily heard with a
  78. simple wire loop antenna, and appear to be strongest around 21 MHz.
  79.  
  80. It might be interesting to tune the 21 MHz (15 meter) band after sunset, when
  81. ionospheric refraction has diminished and Jupiter is visible in the night sky
  82. to hear these signals across the reaches of space.

  85. * VISIBLE SPYSAT *
  86. ------------------
  87. A secret CIA/USAF reconnaissance satellite launched by the Space Shuttle
  88. "Columbia" on 08-Aug-89 has been seen tumbling by astronomers in seven
  89. countries. Photographs of the spacecraft show brilliant flashes of light
  90. every second, as the spacecraft tumbles and reflects sunlight. The flashes
  91. of light are of a gold color, and are mostly 3 to 5th magnitude, but can
  92. exceed 1st magnitude at times.

  146. SWEDEN--We have a change in the Radio Sweden schedule to South Asia and
  147. Australia, beginning Friday December 1st. The broadcast at 01:00 hrs has a
  148. new frequency of 11760 kHz. That replaces 9640.
  149.  
  150. TELEVISION--Pay television seems to be increasing in Europe. Canal Plus, the
  151. pioneer French pay channel, just celebrated its fifth birthday by announcing
  152. that it has 3 million subscribers, and a profit for the past year of more
  153. than 120 million dollars. Canal Plus was Europe's first pay-TV channel, and
  154. it's now expanding outside France. Three channels for Canal Plus have already
  155. been reserved on the TDF-1 direct broadcast satellite, including one in
  156. German. (Reuter)

  158. Swedish Television has discussed a pay-TV channel, to be carried on the Tele-
  159. X direct broadcast satellite. Unlike current European pay channels, this
  160. would be a pay-per-view system. But the board of the Swedish Broadcasting
  161. Corporation last week deferred a decision on the plan until later. (TT)

  163. PUBLICATIONS--Bengt Friedewald has finally published the new edition of his
  164. "International Listening Guide". The issue covers the period until March
  165. 24th, 1990. It lists external and home service broadcasts in English to all
  166. parts of the world by time, and is an excellent reference, especially if
  167. you're travelling. It also summarizes the schedules of General and World
  168. Services in English from Radio Australia, the BBC, and Radio Moscow, the
  169. Christian Science Monitor, and VOA. Finally, it includes a detailed database
  170. by frequency showing which stations are on the air at various times and in
  171. what language.
  172.  
  173. This is the same as the heart of "Passport to Worldband Radio". The tables
  174. there are easier to read, but the ILG is much cheaper, and is to be updated
  175. regularly. Assuming the ILG does resume regular publication now, we recommend
  176. it and the World Radio TV Handbook as the best shortwave broadcast reference

  180. There are also lots of stations on the shortwave bands besides broadcast
  181. stations. Some are radio amateurs, but most are the so-called "utlity
  182. stations", such as news agencies, ships and aircraft. Joerg Klingenfuss has
  183. published a new edition of his "Guide to Utility Stations", the best
  184. reference we've seen for these activities. It's more than 500 pages long and
  185. has up-to-date listings of tens of thousands of frequencies. It also includes
  186. more exotic modes such as Fax, RTTY, and Navtex transmissions. For more

  190. Michel Ravigneaux has published new editions of three publications: the
  191. "French Free Radio List" (listing around 2200 stations), the "List of Radio

  196. COMPUTER CORNER--IRIX, the Irish Information Exchange is a computer bulletin
  197. board catering for many specialist interests, including Ireland's changing

  201. AFGHANISTAN/USSR--Updating SCDX-2067, the Radio Afghanistan broadcast in
  202. English to South and Southeast Asia and the Far East at 09:00-10:30 hrs now
  203. uses 17720 and 21600 kHz. This is a relay from transmitters in the USSR.

  206. BELGIUM--BRT is now using 21820 kHz instead of 21815 for Dutch at 13:00,
  207. English at 13:30, and French at 14:00 hrs. These broadcasts are beamed to

  210. CANADA--Updating SCDX-2068, Radio Canada International's broadcast in German
  211. at 17:30-18:00 hrs now uses 13650 kHz. 5995, 7235, 15325, 17820, and 21545

  214. COSTA RICA--With the reduction in aid to the anti-Nicaraguan Contras, the
  215. Voice of America has ended its activities with Radio Costa Rica, a station
  216. set-up to circumvent the country's law preventing foreign interests from
  217. owning broadcast outlets. According to "mv-eko", the VOA has dismantled its
  218. station on 930 kHz in Ciudad Quesada in northern Costa Rica. Sixty percent of
  219. Radio Costa Rica programming had been a relay of the VOA in Spanish. Some of
  220. those programs can now be heard on Radio Centro in San Jose (820 kHz), Radio
  221. Monumental in San Carlos (1140 kHz), and Radio Cima in Ciudad Quesada (1500

  224. CUBA/USSR--Radio Habana Cuba is now broadcasting to Europe, Africa and the
  225. Middle East via transmitters in the Soviet Union in French at 19:00 and
  226. English at 20:00 hrs on 11850 kHz. There's another broadcast in French at
  227. 21:00 hrs and in English at 22:00 hrs on 7215 kHz. (Herbert Aichele, West

  230. ECUADOR--Updating SCDX-2066, the now once-a-week "DX Partyline" is broadcast
  231. Monday evenings local time in North America (06:00 hrs on 6230, 9745, and
  232. 11775 kHz), and Saturdays to Europe (at 08:00 hrs on 6050 and 9610 kHz) and
  233. the South Pacific (10:30 hrs on 9745 and 11925 kHz). "Ham Radio Today"
  234. continues to be broadcast on Wednesdays, at the same time and on the same
  235. frequencies as "DX Partyline". (HCJB)

  237. The European transmission in Czech at 05:00, Nordic languages at 05:30,
  238. German at 06:00, and French at 06:45 hrs now uses a new frequency of 6130

  241. FRANCE--The Radio France International broadcast in English to Southeast Asia
  242. at 14:00-14:30 hrs is now using 21770 kHz, as well as Chinese relays on 4130

  245. GIBRALTAR--The British Forces Broadcasting Service now has two channels in
  246. Gibraltar, both using only FM. BFBS-1 uses 89.45, 93.5, and 97.8 MHz; and

  250. INDIA--All India Radio is now broadcasting to Europe in English at 18:45-
  251. 19:45 hrs on 7412 and 11620 kHz and 20:45-22:30 hrs on 7412 and 9910 kHz.

  254. INDONESIA--The Voice of Indonesia is testing on a new frequency of 9675 kHz.
  255. This is for broadcasts in Spanish at 17:30, German at 18:00, French at 19:00,
  256. and English at 20:00 hrs. The closing announcement still mentions the old
  257. frequencies of 7225, 11790, and 15150 kHz. (Andreas Kuppert, West Germany)

  259. ISRAEL--Once again Kol Israel plans to broadcast live Christmas Eve mass from
  260. the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem. The broadcast is scheduled to begin
  261. at 21:50 hrs on December 24th, and the frequencies are 7462, 9435, 9930,
  262. 11605, 13750, and 15615 kHz. The French program at 22:00 hrs and English at
  263. 22:30 will be pre-empted for the live broadcast. Note that there may be
  264. changes caused by the Palestinean "Intifada" in the occupied territories.

  267. JAPAN/GABON--Radio Japan is broadcasting in Portuguese and Spanish 09:00-
  268. 10:00 hrs on 11875 and 21630 kHz. There are also broadcasts in English,
  269. Portuguese, and Spanish 02:00-04:00 hrs on 11875 and 17835 kHz. 15325 and
  270. 15350 kHz are in parallel from the relay station in Gabon. (Carolina J.G.

  273. JORDAN--The new Al Karanah transmitter on 207 kHz has been heard by the EBU
  274. monitoring station in Finland. This computer-assisted system has been built
  275. by the Swedish-Swiss multinational ABB. The new transmitter in Ajlun on 1494

  278. Radio Jordan has also replaced 6145 and 6125 kHz with 6135. This is parallel

  299. PAKISTAN--The General Overseas Service of Radio Pakistan broadcasts in
  300. English 16:00-16:30 hrs now on 13665, 15605, 17565, 17895, 21480, and 21740

  303. PANAMA--As protests continue against Panama's strongman General Manual
  304. Noriega, BBC Monitoring has relayed reports from wire services about a
  305. clandestine TV transmission on November 5th. The broadcast of a Panama
  306. Defence Forces that is networked nationally every Sunday was interupted by an
  307. interview with the widow of the officer who led the thwarted coup against
  308. General Noriega two days before. The pirate broadcast was reported to have
  309. lasted 15 to 25 minutes on TV channel 12, and is also reported to have been
  310. carried on FM 99 MHz. (BBC Monitoring)

  312. PHILIPPINES--We've had many differing reports about the English schedule from
  313. Radio Veritas Asia recently, and sometimes it has been hard to know what were
  314. the new frequencies and what were the old ones. Jaap van der Wees in the
  315. Netherlands gives us what seems to be the latest word. Until November 6th, he
  316. says, Radio Veritas announced 9525 and 15445 kHz for the broadcast at 15:00
  317. hrs. Beginning November 7th Radio Veritas announced 11740 and 15445 kHz for
  318. this broadcast. The station also announced 15360 and 17800 kHz for the
  319. broadcast at 01:30 hrs. (Jaap van der Wees, Netherlands)

  321. UNITED KINGDOM--The BBC is to introduce its new Radio 5 service in August,
  322. 1990. It will be the first new domestic national network for 23 years, and
  323. will use Radio 2's current medium wave channels--693 and 909 kHz. Radio 2
  324. will then be FM only. Radio 5 is to broadcast sports and education programs,
  325. and highlights from the BBC World Service are also promised. (Norman Davies,

  328. The latest edition of "London Calling" from the BBC World Service, has an
  329. interesting article about BBC Monitoring. The 50 year old organization is in
  330. the midst of a 8 year GBP 18 million modernization program to bring it into
  331. the computer age.

  333. USSR--Updating last week's report, Radio Vilnius in Lithuania is broadcasting
  334. in English at 23:00 hrs on an unannounced frequency of 17665, in addition to

  337. A new youth station is to go on the air in Vilnius. It will broadcast on FM
  338. 73.34 MHz in stereo, with music, discussions, and reports on youth life.

  341. YUGOSLAVIA--Radio Yugoslavia is broadcasting in French: 17:00-17:30 hrs on
  342. 7215, 9620, and 15165 kHz; 21:30-22:00 hrs on 5980, 7215, and 11735 kHz; and

  345. Radio Yugoslavia is broadcasting in English: 01:00-01:45 hrs on 5980, 6005,
  346. and 11735 kHz; 13:00-13:30 hrs on 11735, 15165, and 15325 kHz; 19:30-20:00
  347. hrs on 5980, 7215, and 11735 kHz; and 22:00-22:45 hrs on 7215, 9620, 9660,

  350. UNOFFICIAL RADIO--With the Vietnamese withdrawal from Cambodia, the fight by
  351. the Khmer Rouge guerillas and their allies to recover the country has
  352. renewed. In SCDX-2058 we mentioned one anti-Cambodian government station, the
  353. Voice of Kampuchea. Another rebel station is the Voice of the Khmer (Samleing
  354. Khmer), which according to the rebel's "NCR Bulletin" broadcasts 22:30-03:00,
  355. 04:00-07:00 (Sundays 08:00), and 09:00-14:00 hrs on 1200, 1250, and 6325 kHz.

  358. The Voice of the National Army of Democratic Kampuchea has announced it is
  359. now broadcasting: 23:15-02:00, 08:00-09:00, and 10:00-16:00 hrs. (BBC
  360. Monitoring) No frequency was indicated, but the Khmer Rouge Voice of
  361. Democratic Kampuchea has been reported on around 6975 kHz. (DX Editor)

  363. UNKNOWN--Chetan Kumar tells us about a program called "Network" advertised in
  364. a local newspaper as broadcasting to India at 15:00-16:00 hrs on 9590 and
  365. 15325 kHz. According to information from the address in the ad, the programs
  366. are supposed to appeal to people aged 15 to 30 and feature world and sports
  367. news, hi-tech information, drama, short stories, quizzes, and lots of music.
  368. This mysterious station has a mailing address in Madras, but doesn't mention
  369. where they broadcast from. (Chetan Kumar, India) Anyone know anything about
